Kahlan Mason is the witch of the family, she was rather successful at Hogwarts going onto become a mediwitch and working at St Mungo's. She decided that she wished to travel and in her line of work there were always positions in other countries that she could take so that is what she did. But she was never happy in settling anywhere, nowhere felt as right as London did and so she moved back to Britain after having her own taste for far off places. It was once she had returned and was working once again in London that she met Arhur. He was a muggle paramedic and in a serious accident in which both magic and muggle people needed treatment they ended up working together. It took time but after spending time together they eventually married. Arthur took the knowledge that Kahlan was a witch fairly badly, it took him a while to accept it and understand, but eventually he came round.
It was on a trip visiting family when Kahlan went into labor to give birth to Rupert, he was several weeks early and so they were unable to get to St Mungo's, too afraid to apparate, Kahlan allowed Arthur to take her to a muggle hospital where she gave birth to her first born son.
Four years later they made sure not to go any long distance travelling, and Emily, Rupert's younger sister was born.
They both grew up knowing both the magic and muggle world, and unlike his sister Rupert took a great interest in learning about it. His sister was more happy to wait until she went to Hogwarts, but Rupert had a thirst for knowledge that his mother was proud of. She helped him find books that he would have a chance of understanding and tried to explain to him somethings that he didn't understand. He often got frustrated that he wasn't allowed or couldn't do any of the magic, especially when his mother used it so freely.
He would like to boast about his knowledge to his younger sister, and a couple of friends of other wizarding families. He would also like to play chess, one game that he always found a challenge, yet could never admit defeat to, he would always plead for rematches, or would claim that his friend had cheated. Rupert was always a sore loser and not happy to be proven wrong at anything.
When his Hogwarts letter came, he knew that he was finally going to be able to do real magic, and he couldn't bid his family farewell any faster when they dropped him off at Platform 9 3/4.
During his first couple of years at Hogwarts he strived to be better than others, and most importantly better than himself. He would always want to improve and learn more. A hunger for knowledge, he ate through books, but not fiction, he couldn't stand those types of books always seeing them as a waste of time. His best subject being transfiguration and worst being divination, he couldn't understand how it was a real subject, it was all flowery and just not proper magic.
